Remove super glue from skin, clothing and surfaces

It only takes a moment for a drop to land in the wrong place. With a little patience, super glue can be removed from almost anywhere.

In briefRemove super glue from skin with warm soapy water and a gentle rolling motion, never by force. Acetone helps on glass and metal. On plastic, paint and textiles, first test acetone in an inconspicuous spot because it can damage the material.
Important: If glue gets in your eye or on your lips, do not rub or force them open. Rinse with plenty of lukewarm water and seek medical help immediately.

From skin

  1. Soak the area in warm soapy water for a few minutes.
  2. Gently roll stuck fingers against each other or slowly push them apart with a blunt object. Do not pull them apart.
  3. Rub any residue with a rich cream or cooking oil and gently rub it off.
  4. Stubborn residue can be removed with acetone-based nail polish remover. Wash and moisturise your hands afterwards. Do not use on broken skin.

Any remaining glue will come off on its own after one or two days as the skin renews itself.

From clothing and textiles

  1. Let the glue harden completely and do not rub it in.
  2. Carefully break off or scrape away the hardened glue.
  3. Test acetone in an inconspicuous spot. Then dab with a cloth, working from the outside in.
  4. Wash the garment as usual.

Fabrics containing acetate or triacetate cannot tolerate acetone: it dissolves the fibres. Take delicate items to a professional cleaner.

From glass and metal

Apply acetone to a cloth, soak the spot for a few minutes and wipe it off. On glass, remaining glue can be lifted off with a flat blade.

From plastic and painted surfaces

Acetone attacks many plastics and paints. First try warm soapy water or a little cooking oil and a plastic scraper. Use acetone only briefly and only after testing it in an inconspicuous spot.

From wood

On untreated wood, sand off the hardened glue with fine sandpaper. For painted or oiled surfaces, follow the same advice as for paint: try a gentle method first and test acetone beforehand.

How to prevent spills

  • Put down a protective covering and use glue sparingly. A thin film provides the best bond anyway.
  • Use a fine applicator tip and wipe it clean after gluing.
  • Close the bottle again immediately.
